You know that season of life where everything is happening all at once -- graduation, careers, maybe a house, definitely a wedding... and the idea of planning one more thing (like a honeymoon) feels… terrifying?

That’s exactly where Izzy & Brayden were when we first “met” them in a Facebook group two years ago. Izzy was finishing college, they were high school sweethearts who’d already been together seven years, and she knew one thing for sure: she did not want to take on the responsibility of planning a destination wedding by herself. Life started life-ing—new job, big decisions, shifting priorities; so instead of a big destination wedding, they chose a sweet micro-wedding in October 2023 and put the dream honeymoon on pause.

Fast forward to June 2025, and Izzy popped back into our inbox with the best kind of message:

“We’re finally ready to take our honeymoon… and celebrate our 2-year anniversary.”

What led you to choose Secrets Tides, and how would you describe your experience there?
We wanted a tropical and luxury feeling vacation and Secrets Tides definitely delivered! We were going more for relaxation than party vibes and I think that John & Jenn helped us choose perfectly! (We still had fun at the bars that were open later, too lol!) It was an amazing stay that made us feel so special and taken care of! Every staff member we interacted with was so welcoming and friendly and made us want to stay forever.

What’s one “extra” you’re super glad you splurged on?
I’m so happy we got preferred club. Yulian (our butler), the preferred pool, the super chill preferred lounge to hang out in and make friends. Plus the food truck was amazing. We also ended up booking a banana boat tubing experience with seapro that was super fun!

If you could choose three words to describe your vacation, what would they be?
“Excelente!” gorgeous, peaceful!

What unforgettable memories did you create on your trip, and what stood out to you about your experience working with United Travel?
We made so many friends on our trip! We loved our butler who was recommended by United Travel - we felt really taken care of by all! I’m so glad we followed their advice in all of this, especially when it came to choosing our room which had a swim out pool! It was so romantic and relaxing. Setting Sail: The Perfect Start

Flying in the night before was a game-changer. Instead of a 3 AM wake-up call and rushing to port, we enjoyed a stay at The Goodtime Hotel in South Beach Miami, grabbed brunch, and even ran into Ja Rule on our way to pick up champagne. Talk about a sign of good things to come!

Once onboard Scarlet Lady, we kicked off with the Grog Walk, a fun (and slightly boozy) bar crawl for only $50/person that helped us meet an amazing group of fellow sailors – some of whom we ended up spending half the cruise with! Highly recommend doing this on night one, it's an effortless way to meet people, making it an ideal choice for solo travelers, couples, and groups celebrating birthdays, bachelor/ette parties, or just life itself.

Standout Experiences in Every Port

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

We took on the Damajagua Waterfalls excursion, which was equal parts thrilling and a little scary (think sliding down natural rock formations into the water with a few tropical rain showers sprinkled in!). Afterward, we wandered Pink Street and grabbed the most amazing beef empanadas on Umbrella Street, so good we went back for seconds and of course a Presidente beer.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

We skipped the structured tours and did our own Instagram-worthy city walk, soaking up the colorful streets and historic vibes. For dinner, Rieces delivered on authentic Puerto Rican flavors before we crashed early, completely wiped from exploring.

St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

A hidden gem! We walked just over a mile to Dorsch Beach, where we snorkeled with massive starfish, pufferfish, stingrays, and even a sea turtle. Lunch at The Fred was the perfect way to refuel before heading back to the ship.

Bimini, Bahamas

This stop stole our hearts! These are some must do’s while on Bimini:
✔ Ashley’s Dolphin House – A must-see, hand-built by a local legend, Ashley (such a kind and warm man).
✔ Ms. Antoinette’s Gift Shop – The best rum cake and souvenirs!
✔ Ebbie & Pat’s – The locals say it’s the spot for the best conch fritters.
✔ Renting a golf cart – $80-$100 cash USD for the day and totally worth it.
✔ Check out the sharks - located at the Marina & Hemingway’s Poolside Rum Club on Kings Highway.
At Virgin’s Beach Club, we lucked out with beach chairs by going later in the day. The Caribbean-inspired food? Incredible. (Pro tip: Mix the chicken with the pumpkin curry. Thank us later.)

Onboard Perks & Hidden Gems

Virgin Voyages keeps things fresh…even for repeat sailors. Here’s what stood out:

Secret Speakeasy Event – We’ve been sworn to secrecy, but befriend the Happenings Crew and you just might score an invite. Totally worth it.
Best Cocktail? The Entertainer. Found at On the Rocks, it’s a passion fruit & vodka mix with a shot of champagne….perfection.
Best Bartender? Lucy at The Loose Cannon. She made us an off-menu tropical vodka cocktail that we’re still dreaming about.
Best Restaurant? The Wake. Hands down, still our favorite for an elevated steak & seafood dinner. But the new 3rd menu at The Test Kitchen ran a solid second place! And the ice cream still is addicting.
Best Entertainment? It was a mix: Love Love Love and Two Ships in the Night were solid, but Duel Reality felt overhyped. The Y2K Party, though? Pure 1999 nostalgia-fueled fun. And Scarlet Night, ALWAYS A HIT (especially when it falls on your birthday!)
Workout Classes? Still Amazing. The bungee workout was even tougher this time, but so worth it.
Surprise Highlight? Paint & Sip Class. $35 well spent for a fun, creative afternoon (John was there for the sips, I was there for the masterpiece!).

New Insights & Insider Tips

Ask for a pillow topper – It makes the bed so much comfier (PRO TIP: ask your cabin steward right when you board).
No more reservations for shows – Get the daily schedule printed at The Grounds Club or Excursion Desk so you don’t miss anything.
Shake for Champagne – Still a bit underwhelming, the Moët could be colder, but still fun nonetheless.
WiFi changes – The free plan no longer supports video streaming, so if you need full access, expect to pay $150 per device for 8 nights.
RockStar Perks – First time, we didn’t think it was worth it. This time? Seeing others enjoy private beach areas, full liquor bottles in their rooms, and access to Richard’s Rooftop had us feeling major FOMO.

Sure, kicking back and relaxing at your all-inclusive resort is going to be fun. But if you really want your girls’ trip—whether it’s a bachelorette escape or just a BFF getaway—to be extra memorable, definitely add on an exclusive excursion or activity. It’s an easy way to elevate your trip, promote even more bonding, and will help you all walk away with stories to reminisce over for years to come.

Here are our four favorite excursions to add on to an all-inclusive resort girls’ trip:

A catamaran excursion:

If you’re going to Cancun, the Dominican Republic, or somewhere else with gorgeous lapping waves, you must get out on the water! Opt for a sunset catamaran cruise if your group wants to start the night’s party in high style. If you and your girlfriends are more adventurous, go instead for a daytime snorkeling trip where you can encounter incredible sea life as you swim through the sparkling turquoise sea. Either way, upgrade the experience by choosing to charter your own boat and crew, making it a private excursion (rather than joining a boat that can host a larger crowd filled with strangers). You’ll feel like VIPs all excursion long!

A cooking class:

The best way to learn about a new-to-you culture? Through its food! If you’ve got a few foodies in your group, choose a cooking class where you can all polish up your kitchen skills while learning about—and noshing on—local delicacies. Some resorts offer cooking classes on site, or you can go off property and into the kitchen of a local restaurant for greater culinary immersion.

For a spicier twist on the traditional cooking class, opt for a cocktail class instead. A mixology expert will show your group how to whip up some signature cocktails—and of course, you get to sip to your hearts’ content throughout the class!

A beach club day:

Our travel clients who build a day at a beach club into their resort experience come home raving about it. Who doesn’t love a good party on a beach? And that’s exactly what a “beach club” is—a swanky, seaside club throwing an all-day, day-drinking party. We like to sweeten the experience by making sure our clients get the “VIP” package; this often comes with a private daybed or cabana just for your group, special drinks or food, and, often, even a private server.

You may find a day club at your resort, or you could explore another spot along the beach. Some clubs come with both oceanfront space and a pool. Day clubs usually wrap up by early evening—which means you have time to head back to your resort for a power nap before you get ready for another epic night out!

A professional photoshoot:

Sure, camera phones keep getting better and better … but there’s nothing like going with a total pro to capture your girls’ trip memories. Throw on your best coordinating outfits and strike a pose! You can often hire a photographer from your resort and have a photoshoot on property. For an even more elevated experience (and better photos), hire a local photographer and head to a unique space in your destination, so you can get some exploring in at the same time.

Destination weddings are a fabulous choice for tying the knot—we think just about every couple should have one! But, if you don’t know what you’re doing, the whole planning thing can get out of control and way overwhelming, fast.

If you’re thinking about having a destination wedding, take a pause and read this first. These are 3 of the most common (and costly) mistakes we see destination wedding couples make when they try to plan on their own:

Mistake #1: Not having a room block

If you try to “DIY” your destination wedding, you may not know what the term “room block” refers to. Essentially, when you contract with a resort to host your wedding there, they set aside a group of rooms just for your guests—this is WAY different than simply telling your guests to book a room at a resort for certain dates. It's important to note, having a room block guarantees inventory, NOT that all rooms will be close together on property.

You want to make sure you get a contract for a room block, and then ensure your guests actually book into the room block (instead of “going rogue” and booking a random room themselves) for several reasons. For one, you’ll contract your block of rooms at a certain rate, locking in that rate for your guests—the rates the hotel offers can change, but the rooms in your room block won’t!

You also are setting aside a certain amount of inventory at the resort, so again—even if the resort sells out, the rooms and your room block will still be available for your guests. Plus, many of the “perks” associated with hosting a resort destination wedding—like getting a 5th night free or a complimentary cocktail hour—are tied to your room block. If you don’t meet a certain room block minimum, you won’t get your perks (and guests that book outside the room block won’t count toward your minimums!). It may even cost extra for guests booked off-resort to attend your wedding events.

Lastly, having a room block is just easier. It’s easier to keep track of who’s actually coming to your wedding, because you can simply check who’s booked into your room block. This is SO important since knowing exactly who’s coming allows you to effectively plan your wedding events—you need an accurate guest count to plan them out! If you expect more than 20 guests at your destination wedding, then we think you NEED a room block (and we’ll manage it for you as a part of our planning services!). Make sure to read up on how to invite your guests to your destination wedding to ensure they book into your room block.

Mistake #2: Missing room block deadlines

Getting a room block for your guests at your chosen resort comes with a lot of pluses—but there are costly mistakes we see couples make with their room blocks all the time. The most common one is missing room block deadlines, which can leave you on the hook for major $$$.

Here’s what happens: when you contract with a resort for a room block, there are built in “drop” deadlines—basically, if you don’t get guests to book all of the rooms in your room block by “X” date, then you can drop the unused rooms from your room block, no problem.

But … if you miss that deadline to drop rooms, you’ll be the ones who have to pay for the unused rooms, which could be thousands of dollars. When you’re juggling all of the details of your wedding and playing travel agent to your guests, it’s all too easy to get deadlines like this mixed up! That’s why we keep track of important dates like room block deadlines for all of our clients.

Mistake #3: Having a destination wedding when you shouldn’t

It’s no secret we’re BIG fans of destination weddings (we’ve had one ourselves!)—but they’re not for everyone. It’s so important to figure out if a destination wedding is the right move for you way before you get into the planning weeds.

Destination weddings generally aren’t a good fit for couples who have “trust issues,” meaning they have a hard time letting go of being in charge of everything. When you’re planning a wedding in a foreign country from a distance, it’s just not possible to micro-manage every detail, and so you have to put your faith in the people you’ve hired to pull it off.

If having a legal wedding ceremony—as opposed to a symbolic one—is super important to you, then a destination wedding might not work for you either. That’s because the requirements to hold a legal ceremony in many countries as foreigners are very stringent; for example, Mexico requires the couple to complete a blood test before the ceremony. The vast majority of resort destination weddings are symbolic. In fact, we got “legally” married in our living room while wearing workout clothes before our destination wedding!

Finally, if you have “non-negotiable” guests that you must have at your wedding, make sure they can make the trip before you start planning. If illness, mobility issues, or other concerns prevent one of your “favorite people” from attending a destination wedding, there’s no shame in staying local to have them take part in your big day.

You know you want a destination wedding (yay!). And you know you don’t want to plan it alone (double yay!).

So you know you need to hire a travel agent to help. Or is it a wedding planner you need? Or is it … someone completely different??

In the world of destination weddings, there’s a whole range of wedding pros you can hire—some more helpful than others. We know all the different terms you’ll encounter can get confusing, fast, so we’re breaking down the most common types of destination wedding planning assistance below:

Travel Agent:

A travel agent can help book you and your guests at your destination wedding resort—but that’s about it. A travel agent isn’t a destination wedding specialist; they’ll usually book any type of vacation for any client. That means they don’t have the specialized knowledge to provide you guidance on where to host your destination wedding, plus all the “insider” tips to make your experience even more special and seamless. Travel agents only book travel—they don’t help with planning the destination wedding or associated events. They typically offer their services on a complimentary basis, but because they’re operating more more like a booking “factory”—handling tons of bookings from all kinds of clients—they usually do not have the bandwidth to give a destination wedding couple and their guests the personalized attention they deserve.

Resort Wedding Coordinator:

When you book a destination wedding package at a resort, you’ll be assigned a resort wedding coordinator as a part of your package. This person does NOT help you or your guests book travel. And while they may do some very basic event design, they can be hard to get a hold of. Instead, their main focus is on making sure the day-of destination wedding event goes smoothly—for your vendors. They’ll be on hand to coordinate vendor arrivals and set up, a crucial job. Their primary job isn’t to make you, the couple, more comfortable—they generally do the bare minimum when it comes to making sure you’re where you're supposed to be and managing all the big emotions that bubble up on your big day.

Local Wedding Planner:

You could hire a wedding planner in your destination—if you do, their focus will be on bringing your specific wedding day vision to life. They can provide guidance on your wedding day design and timeline and will usually be on hand the day of for support. Because they’re specifically hired by the couple, they’re focused on making sure the couple feels comfortable and happy during the event. Keep in mind, though, that while a local wedding planner may help you determine the right resort and assist with securing your room block, they're totally hands off when it comes to actually getting your guests booked and prepared for travel. A local wedding planner works on retainer and will charge a fee for their services, which varies depending on the services provided.

Destination Wedding Travel Advisor:

Like a travel agent, a Destination Wedding Travel Advisor works on the travel side of things, getting you and your guests booked at the resort and arranging transportation. But there’s a BIG difference between the two: this professional is specialized, not a generalist. They focus their business on destination weddings, so they know the business inside and out. That means they can offer expert guidance on which resorts to pick, assist you with navigating your package options, and may even have cultivated personal relationships with resort staff so things run even more smoothly. Event planning isn’t a part of their role, but they’re usually able to step in if you need support here. This type of travel advisor has often earned certifications in the industry that indicate their specialization; for example, at United Travel, we hold certifications from Destination Wedding University and AIC, among others. A Destination Wedding Travel Advisor also typically charges a retainer fee for their services (unlike a more generalized Travel Agent)—this allows them to give more personalized attention to every client.

Destination Wedding Architect:

Okay, we’ll admit we made this “term” up … but that’s because there’s nothing really in the industry that describes this last role!
